What is a domain name?

kir_arrow102 A domain name is your address on the internet. It has a unique identity and in most cases is the basis of every web site address, eg. our name "webage". A domain name can consist of up to 67 characters, numbers and dashes. Once you have chosen a name you will need to choose an extension to go on the end of it. The extension is usually country specific, like ".com.au" for Australia, but there is also a generic set of extensions that are non-geographical. These include ".com", ".net" and ".org". It is important that you select a domain name that best represents your company or business. It takes just five minutes to register a domain name!

What is domain parking and hosting?

kir_arrow102 Domain parking is the term used for registering a domain name, but not actually using it for a web site or email. You might want to use our domain parking facility if your are trying to protect a brand or trade name, but the business is not yet active. Hosting is when the domain is connected to a web site and is usually publicly available for people to view. This type of of hosting package means you do not have to cover the costs of having a server in your premises. The connectivity and cost of the hardware is very expensive and costly to maintain. By having the hosting with Webage we can manage the hardware for you and because we have a large customer base, are able to keep the costs right down.

How do I get an email address featuring my own name?

kir_arrow102 Many people have simple email addresses supplied by their internet providers but we can provide you with a custom email address featuring your own name. Once you have registered the domain name of your choice you will receive access information to a web-based Control Panel. If you access this and go to the mail configuration area you will be able to setup specific email addresses, eg. "yourname@" or "info@", etc. Once the email addresses have been set up you can use our handy webmail facility to access the emails or you can can download the mail through Outlook or Outlook Express.

kir_arrow102 If you want a domain name, email address with your own name and a web site, then Webage offers you a wide assortment of hosting and email packages for low prices. What is Shared Hosting?

kir_arrow102 In Shared Hosting, multiple sites are hosted on a single server, so each account ends up "sharing" server space and performance with other accounts. The main advantage to this is that it keeps the costs of service down as the hardware costs and maintenance thereof is shared across several customers.

What is the difference between Web Hosting and Shared Hosting?

kir_arrow102 Actually, not an awful lot. At the end of the day it is just down to jargon. Depending on your geographical location or which company you have hosting, they might call it web hosting or they might call it shared hosting.
